Marble has long been used in homes, institutions, infrastructure, and cultural buildings. Yet it is rarely treated as an engineered surface system — a complex interaction of material properties, substrate conditions, environmental factors, and human use.

Most marble failures are not material failures. They are outcomes of installation decisions, detailing assumptions, and the absence of lifecycle thinking. The consequences — cracking, lippage, staining, slip hazards — carry significant cost and safety implications.

The Center of Excellence is an institutional response to this gap.
